After a brief Happy Hour stop at Tequila Grill, The Upstate Life made his way over to DAR for the Modest Mouse show. TUL missed Camper Van Beethoven since a) They went on at a way too early start time of 8pm, b) we honestly didn't know anything by them and c) $2.75 Coronas seemed much more enticing at the time. Our seats were kickass, even better than The Pixies show last December. We were "seated" (I use that term loosely since we were standing the entire time, obvs) in the fourth row of the left orchestra section. Not too shabby my friends. Brock and Co. came on stage and kicked off the concert with "Dramamine." Despite DAR's limitations, it's still amazing how good these guys sound live. Most of the material, as was expected, was culled from Good News For People Who Love Bad News. I admittedly was getting a little bored for a short period of time since I was dying to hear some of their older material (Lonesome Crowded West is still my favorite album by them). My wishes were soon fulfilled as they not only performed "Trailer Trash", but closed out the first set with an incredible rendition of "Breakthrough." The highlight of the evening was when MM ended the show with "Tiny City Made of Ashes", a song I was clamoring for the last time I saw them live but that never came to fruition, at least not until last night of course. The band broke into a prolonged jam during the finale and was an excellent way to end the show. Setlist via modmouse.com:
