Mason City

George Mason, so hot right now. It's arguably the sports story of the year. Sorry Jason McElwain, your fifteen minutes are officially up. I'm not going to lie, I wrote these dudes off in the first round. Hell, I even doubted their bid Billy Packer-style in a post the day after Selection Sunday. First, they knock out Michigan State, a team I had advancing to the second round, then they go ahead and take down UNC, an Elite Eight selection in TUL's bracket. Then of course, history was made last night at the MCI Verizon Center as the Patriots narrowly defeated The Upstate Life's formerly projected 2006 NCAA Champions, the Connecticut Huskies, in what was arguably one of the best college basketball games I've ever witnessed. It was right up there with the 2002 Elite Eight match-up classic of UConn vs Maryland (nothing could replicate being in the student section of the Syracuse '02 Regional that night). You can't write a better story than what the George Mason Patriots are experiencing right now. Oh, and Duke losing in the Sweet Sixteen (again!) lightened our spirits as well.

Number of NCAA Championships: Mike Grinnon (Maryland) - 1, JJ Redick (Duke) - 0.
